WELLINGTON -- The cleanup continues here in Wellington days after a gasoline pipeline broke, spilling 116,000 gallons of gasoline.

The area known to have been contaminated is 200 yards by 100 feet.

Since the spill, 160 gallons of contaminated water and gas and more than 600 tons of tainted soil have been hauled away for disposal.

Sunoco's Joe McGuinn says the area has been blocked off with booms that specialize in absorption.

"We're digging it up, cleaning it up, taking every precaution with the rain to make sure that what areas contained stays contained," McGuinn said.

EPA coordinator Don de Blasio says priority number one is to keep the contamination from spreading to the nearby Black River.

"There's always that possibility. We were hoping that we have done enough and what Sonoco was working on would keep it contained," de Blasio said.

It's a race against the clock. The colder temperatures kept the ground frozen. That, along with quick on the ground action, limited the gasoline from causing more damage.

But as the ground thaws and with forecasted rain, the contamination could potentially spread.

Crews are working nonstop in an effort to prevent that from happening.
