WOOSTER -- Ohio and Michigan researchers have received a $1.4 million federal grant to continue their efforts to save ash trees from a tree-killing beetle found in much of the Midwest and parts of Canada.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports that scientists at Ohio State University's Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster are part of the team receiving the grant.
The researchers have been working since 2003 to develop trees resistant to the emerald ash borer.
The beetle is slowly killing trees in at least 15 states including Ohio and Michigan. The larvae bore through tree bark, destroying the soft tissue underneath.
That cuts off a tree's ability to distribute water and food. The three-year grant is from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
