An inmate at the Summit County Jail took his own life shortly early this morning by hanging himself in a cell.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office says it was shortly after midnight when the inmate was found by a deputy and cut down. Attempts were made to resuscitate him, but was pronounced dead at Akron City Hospital.

Authorities say the 29-year-old Akron man showed no signs of being suicidal when he was medically screened by the jail staff.

He had been booked into the jail in early December on charges of possession of cocaine, tampering with evidence, disorderly conduct and illegal conveyance.

The Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.

Due to the circumstances of the story, we did not include the inmate's name.
