AKRON -- The Summit County Prosecutor's office is asking for help in locating family members of a 1975 murder victim.
On December 23, 1975, Dale Collins, then just 17, shoveled snow from the driveway of his elderly neighbor, Helen Shay. Later that afternoon, Collins went to visit Shay.
When she opened the door, Collins knocked Shay down the basement steps, kicked her and choked her with a dog chain. After killing her, Collins and two others ransacked the home.
Shay's sister discovered the body on Christmas Eve 1975.
A judge sentenced Collins to life in prison with eligibility for parole after 20 years. Collins, now 53, is scheduled for a parole hearing on March 27.
Any surviving family members of Helen Shay who would like to attend the hearing or provide input should contact Kristen Arapp in the Victim Services Division of the Summit County Prosecutor's Office at (330) 643-2800.
