CLEVELAND -- Spring and summer sports have arrived and, with them, comes a new Concussion Clinic at MetroHealth.

The Concussion Clinic provides comprehensive follow-up care for concussive brain trauma by its nationally ranked Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation team five days a week at MetroHealth Medical Center and the MetroHealth Strongsville Health Center.

The goal is to make high-quality care easily accessible to ensure patients don't lose neurological function from this treatable injury. MetroHealth's Emergency Department sees two to three patients each day for concussion injuries, which are typically caused by a blow to the head or a whiplash injury of the head and neck.

Concussions can affect concentration, memory, judgment, reflexes, speech, balance and muscle coordination.

Some of the warning signs for concussions include a loss of consciousness, as well as cuts or bruises on the face or head. However, concussions are referred to as a silent injury because there often are no signs of trauma and less than 10% of athletes suffering from a concussion actually lose consciousness.

To schedule an appointment with the MetroHealth Concussion Clinic, call 216-778-4414.
