MAYFIELD HEIGHTS -- Burger King says three workers were fired after a photo posted online appeared to show an employee stepping on lettuce in bins at a northeast Ohio restaurant.

Burger King Corp. said it was "taking the issue very seriously" and won't tolerate employees violating the chain's strict procedures for handling food.

"The franchise has taken swift action to investigate this matter and has terminated the three employees involved in the incident," the company said in an updated statement.

Earlier statements had only one employee terminated.

The hamburger chain's statements to Ohio news outlets didn't directly confirm reports that the picture was taken at a restaurant in Mayfield Heights.

News outlets and other media reports say the picture was posted on the free-for-all website, and GPS data embedded in the photo led to the Mayfield Heights restaurant.

Burger King Corp.'s statement continued, saying the franchisee that runs the independently operated restaurant quickly investigated the matter and three employees were terminated.

The company says it won't tolerate such violations of its strict procedures for safely handling food. It didn't comment on the circumstances in which the photo was taken.
