LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England -- There are no sheep to be found at the British Open.

Their legacy lives on through a landscape pockmarked with deep, treacherous sand traps - hundreds of them.

Welcome to Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

There are a staggering 206 bunkers dotting this historic course, where the British Open begins Thursday.

The golfer who does the best job staying out of these sandy spots of doom could well wind up with the claret jug in his grasp come Sunday evening.

England's Paul Casey says the first rule at Lytham is avoiding the pot bunkers, which are especially imposing and supposedly date back centuries to sheep burrowing in the ground seeking shelter from the imposing weather.

Casey's second rule: "If you're in a bunker, just get it out."
