PALMYRA TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Amid a tornado warning, it was a lightning strike that caused a power outage affecting hundreds of families in Portage County overnight Tuesday.
Lightning struck an electrical substation in Palmyra Township early Wednesday morning, causing a widespread power outage, officials said.
Late Tuesday night, a tornado warning was issued for southeast Portage County, including hail as large as one inch in diameter.
The warning was cancelled about 15 minutes early, as it quickly moved out of the region.
FirstEnergy workers are out all across the area to restore power as quickly as possible.
