  • CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve is a haven for wildlife located in an urban area.

The 88-acre preserve is a man made peninsula of land located just east of Gordon Park. It's made of of sediment dredged from the Cuyahoga River back in the 80s and 90s.

The site has been designated an "Important Birding Area" by the Ohio Audubon Society and is either home or a stopover point for hundreds of migratory bird species. Scientists have also identified 29 species of butterflies, 16 species of mammals, 2 species of reptile, 26 Ohio plant species and 9 species of trees and shrubs.

The preserve is managed by the Cleveland-Cuyahoga Port Authority. The site will also be used as a tool to promote environmental education with students, teachers, and families.

The nature preserve is open to the public seven days a week from dawn until dusk. For more information contact the Port Authority at 216-241-8004.
