CLEVELAND -- The American Heart Association kicks off the 2012 Go Red For Women campaign year by increasing awareness of the risks of heart disease among women during the month of February and calling women to take action to improve their heart health.
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women ages 20 and over, and the disease kills approximately one woman every minute. More women die of cardiovascular diseases than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
While those statistics are startling, the fact is that 80 percent of cardiac events in women may be prevented if they make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and abstaining from smoking.
Go Red For Women is nationally sponsored by Macy's and Merck, and locally presented by University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute.
